What Are Hammertoes?
Hammertoes occur when one or more of the smaller toes become bent at the middle joint, causing the toe to curl downward instead of pointing forward. This is mostly due to muscle imbalances and often associated with bunions. Hammertoe deformity can be painful and make it difficult to wear shoes or walk comfortably.
How it works

Common Causes:
- Footwear: Tight or ill-fitting shoes, especially those with high heels or narrow toe boxes, can force toes into a bent position.
- Muscle Imbalance: When the muscles and tendons controlling toe movement become imbalanced, it can lead to abnormal bending.
- Injury: Trauma or repeated pressure on the toes can result in hammertoes.
- Genetics: Some people may be more prone to developing hammertoes due to foot structure.

Symptoms:
Symptoms vary depending on severity. The most common issues include:
- Pain or irritation at the top of the bent toe
- Corns or calluses where the toe rubs against shoes
- Inflammation or redness
- Restricted movement in the affected toe

Treatment Solutions:
- Conservative: Switching to more comfortable shoes, using pads to relieve pressure, or wearing custom orthotics.
- Physical Therapy: Stretching and strengthening exercises to improve toe alignment.
- Surgical: In more severe cases, surgery may be needed to straighten the toe.
