How it works

What Is StemWave®/ Shockwave Therapy?

StemWave® is a form of extracorporeal shockwave therapy, a research-backed treatment that uses focused acoustic waves to reach deep into injured tissue. The waves increase blood flow, help break up scar tissue, and activate your body’s own stem cells and natural healing mechanisms, all without surgery, injections, or downtime.

StemWave® delivers focused waves rather than radial waves. Focused shockwave technology concentrates acoustic energy at a specific depth beneath the skin, allowing for deeper, more precise tissue penetration than radial devices, which spread energy across a broader area near the surface. That depth and precision is part of why StemWave® works well for the deeper soft-tissue conditions we treat most often, like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendon pain.

What It Treats

We use StemWave® most often for the conditions we see every day at Wisconsin Foot & Ankle Clinic, including:

Because StemWave® works on soft tissue throughout the body, we also use it to treat shoulder, elbow, and wrist pain; knee pain; chronic back and neck pain; and other soft tissue injuries such as strained muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Absolutely the best care! Dr. McDonald was the 3rd podiatrist I had seen with chronic ankle pain. Was able to do x-rays in-office and read them immediately. He was able to find the cause of my problem and treat it when Froedtert said there was nothing wrong with my foot. Came up with a treatment plan and did a steroid injection and have finally been pain free for the first time in 2 and 1/2 years. Truly the most caring, attentive, and knowledgeable!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

You may feel some mild discomfort during treatment, but nothing unbearable, and you’re free to go about your day right afterward.

StemWave® uses focused shockwave technology, not radial. Focused waves converge at a precise depth beneath the skin, allowing them to reach deeper tissue with more targeted energy delivery. Radial devices, by contrast, disperse energy closer to the surface. That difference matters for conditions like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendon pain, which involve deeper tissue structures best reached with focused waves.

Most sessions, including your first visit, take under thirty minutes.

Not at this time. StemWave® is a newer technology in the United States, though it is FDA-listed.

The right number of sessions depends on your condition and will be determined after your first assessment.

Your provider will walk you through a personalized recovery plan and pricing options based on your specific condition and assessment results.

Many patients notice improvement early in their care plan, often after the first treatment, with continued results as sessions progress.
