What Is Achilles Tendonitis?
Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body. This condition is common among athletes and individuals who increase their activity levels too quickly, but it can affect anyone. Achilles Tendonitis is an ailment that occurs over time and often requires a diligent treatment protocol.
How it works

Common Causes:
Inflammation is typically due to altered biomechanics. Regardless of activity level, specific causes include:
- Overuse: Repetitive stress from activities like running, jumping, or walking can lead to inflammation.
- Sudden Activity Increase: A rapid increase in physical activity or exercise intensity can strain the tendon.
- Tight Calf Muscles: Limited flexibility in the calves puts extra tension on the Achilles tendon.
- Foot Structure: Flat feet or high arches may contribute to abnormal stress on the tendon.

Symptoms:
- Pain or stiffness along the Achilles tendon, particularly in the morning
- Swelling or thickening of the tendon
- Pain that worsens with activity
- Difficulty flexing the foot or pointing the toes

Treatment Options:
- Rest & Ice: Reducing activity and applying ice can help manage pain and inflammation.
- Stretching & Strengthening: Exercises to improve calf flexibility and strengthen the tendon.
- Physical Therapy: Assessment of biomechanics and activity-specific therapy may help to realign the pull of the tendon.
- Orthotics: Custom insoles can help correct foot alignment and relieve pressure.
- Surgical: In severe or chronic cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the tendon.
