What Are Bunions?
A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, where it meets the foot. This condition occurs when the metatarsal and phalanx bones move out of alignment, causing the tip of the big toe to lean toward the smaller toes. Over time, this misalignment can lead to the development of a painful, swollen bump on the side of the toe joint. If left untreated, bunions may progress to arthritis of the big toe joint.

Common Causes:
The direct cause for a bunion is not always known. However, some of the most common causes are:
- Genetics: Bunions tend to run in families.
- Footwear: Tight, narrow shoes, especially high heels, can aggravate the condition.
- Foot Structure: Flat feet, low arches, and other structural abnormalities increase the risk.
Symptoms:
Symptoms vary depending on the orientation and severity of the bunion. The most common issues include:
- Pain or soreness in the big toe joint
- Redness, swelling, or inflammation
- Difficulty wearing shoes
- Restricted movement of the toe
Treatment Solutions:
- Conservative: Wearing wider shoes, padding the bunion, or using orthotic devices to relieve pressure.
- Surgical: In severe cases, bunion surgery may be recommended to realign the bones. Surgical approach varies depending on the patient.
