What Is a Foot Fracture?
A foot fracture is a break in one or more of the bones in the foot. This injury can occur in any of the 26 bones that make up the foot and may vary from internal weakening due to overloading (stress fracture) to a complete break, which can significantly impact mobility.
How it works

Common Causes:
While treatment course may not change, some of the most common reasons for foot fractures include:
- Trauma: Direct impact, falls, or accidents can cause fractures in the foot.
- Overuse or Repetitive Stress: Athletes or those with physically demanding jobs may develop stress fractures due to repetitive strain.
- Twisting Injuries: A sudden twist or misstep can lead to fractures, especially in the smaller bones of the foot.

Symptoms:
- Sudden pain at the site of the fracture
- Swelling, bruising, or tenderness in the foot
- Difficulty walking or bearing weight
- Deformity in severe cases

Treatment Options:
Proper therapy depends on the location and severity of the fracture. Proper treatment courses include:
- Immobilization: A cast, splint, or boot may be used to stabilize the foot and allow the bones to heal.
- Rest & Elevation: Reducing activity and keeping the foot elevated can help control swelling and speed recovery.
- Surgical: Severe fractures may require surgery to realign the bones using screws, plates, or pins.
